Crypto-Funded PAC Boosts Ads for Michigan Congressional Primary, Supporting Shri Thanedar Against Donavan McKinney
Crypto-Funded PAC Boosts Ads in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District Ahead of Primary
Detroit, MI — As the primary race heats up in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, the Protect Progress PAC, an affiliate of the Fairshake PAC, has significantly ramped up its advertising efforts, pouring over $2 million into media campaigns to support incumbent Representative Shri Thanedar. The PAC, largely funded by contributions from cryptocurrency giants Ripple Labs and Coinbase, has doubled its spending in just a week, with recent Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings revealing an additional $884,240 in support of Thanedar and more than $150,000 aimed at opposing his Democratic challenger, Donavan McKinney.
Thanedar, who has been a vocal advocate for cryptocurrency legislation, has garnered attention for his support of the stablecoin-focused $GENIUS Act and the Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act, currently under consideration in the Senate. He also cosponsored the Promoting Innovation in Blockchain Development Act, which aims to protect developers in the burgeoning crypto space.
In a statement regarding the PAC’s financial backing, McKinney criticized the influence of the crypto lobby, suggesting that Thanedar’s support for pro-crypto legislation was a payoff for helping former President Trump profit from cryptocurrency investments. McKinney pointed to Trump’s reported earnings of over $1.4 billion from crypto ventures, including his memecoin, Official Trump (TRUMP), and his family’s business, World Liberty Financial.
“It’s clear that the crypto lobby is paying my opponent back for helping Trump make over $1 billion since taking office,” McKinney stated, highlighting the contentious nature of campaign financing in this election cycle.
The Protect Progress PAC is part of a larger strategy by Fairshake, which has spent over $170 million in the 2024 election cycle to support candidates aligned with crypto-friendly policies. As the Michigan primary approaches on Tuesday, the PAC’s influence is evident, with millions already allocated for upcoming races in Texas, Illinois, and other states.
Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy group, reported in June that Fairshake and its affiliates accounted for more than $82 million of the approximately $189 million spent by crypto companies in the 2026 election cycle. With a reported war chest of $193 million as of January, Fairshake is poised to continue its aggressive spending strategy.
In addition to Michigan, the Fairshake affiliate Defend American Jobs PAC has also made its mark in Washington and Alabama, spending over $65,000 to support a Republican candidate in Washington’s 4th congressional district and more than $511,000 to back Jerry Carl Jr., a former Alabama lawmaker, in the state’s 1st congressional district.
As the primaries loom, the intersection of cryptocurrency funding and political influence raises questions about the future of campaign finance and the role of big money in shaping electoral outcomes. With the stakes high, all eyes will be on Michigan’s 13th District as voters head to the polls next week.
