Haroon Anwar, owner of the Mobil gas station on Sanford Avenue near the Orlando Sanford Airport, and his daughter have become vigilant guardians, saving customers over $100,000 by halting fraudulent Bitcoin transactions.

“Yesterday, I stopped a man in his 50s who was visibly shaken. That was his lifetime savings he was about to lose,” Anwar recounted, highlighting the emotional toll these scams can take on victims.

Scammers are increasingly targeting Central Floridians, instructing victims to deposit cash into Bitcoin ATMs under the threat of dire consequences. Once the money is sent, it’s virtually impossible to recover. Anwar shared a harrowing story of a recent victim who was coerced into paying $15,000 but only had $9,000.

“We called the police, but they hung up on him,” Anwar said, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. “We do that every damn day.”

His proactive approach has garnered appreciation from the community. “People send us love letters, thank-you notes, and even try to buy us dinner,” he said, reflecting the gratitude of those he has helped.

Authorities are echoing Anwar’s warnings, emphasizing that no legitimate organization—be it law enforcement, schools, hospitals, or insurance companies—will ever request payment in Bitcoin. “If someone tells you that you missed jury duty and now have a warrant, that’s a scam right there,” Anwar cautioned.

Scammers often employ threats of arrest, deportation, or secrecy to manipulate their victims into compliance. Anwar has developed a keen eye for spotting potential victims, noting that they often linger at the ATM with cash in hand and a phone pressed to their ear.

His advice to anyone who suspects they are being scammed is straightforward: “Don’t fall for it. Call the police and report what’s happening.”

Anwar hopes that by raising awareness, people will take a moment to think critically before acting on suspicious demands, even when pressured by scammers.
