Bermuda-Based Life Insurance Company Raises $37.5 Million Amid Growing Demand for Bitcoin Policies

In a groundbreaking move within the insurance sector, a Bermuda-based life insurance company operating entirely in Bitcoin has successfully raised $37.5 million in funding, signaling a surge in interest from wealthy families around the globe. The funding round, announced Thursday, was led by Bain Capital Crypto and included participation from notable investors such as Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital.

This latest investment brings the company’s total funding to over $180 million, bolstered by high-profile backers, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The firm proudly claims to be the first life insurer licensed to operate solely on Bitcoin, with its entire balance sheet, reserves, and audited financials denominated in the cryptocurrency. It received its pioneering license from the Bermuda Monetary Authority in July 2024 after navigating a rigorous two-year regulatory process.

The company has experienced unprecedented growth, attributing its success to international demand for its innovative products. In early 2026, it launched the BTC Life 1-Pay, a single-premium whole life policy designed specifically for high-net-worth clients outside the United States. This product follows the introduction of a 10-payment version tailored for American taxpayers.

Under the BTC Life 1-Pay policy, clients make a one-time payment in Bitcoin and receive a guaranteed death benefit in Bitcoin for life. The policy’s value appreciates in Bitcoin, and owners can borrow up to 90% of it after the first year without a repayment schedule or margin calls. This unique offering is particularly appealing to affluent families looking for regulated ways to pass on their Bitcoin wealth.

Since its launch, the company has signed 15 brokers in key insurance markets, including Singapore, Hong Kong, the UAE, and Switzerland. Its net long-term underwriting income has already surpassed last year’s totals, reflecting a robust demand for its innovative insurance solutions.

“Wealthy families around the world already hold Bitcoin. What they haven’t had is a regulated way to pass it on,” said Zac Townsend, co-founder and CEO of the company. This sentiment underscores a broader trend in the financial industry, as traditional insurers increasingly seek to integrate Bitcoin into their product offerings. For instance, Delaware Life recently partnered with BlackRock to provide Bitcoin exposure through a fixed indexed annuity, highlighting the growing intersection of cryptocurrency and long-term financial planning.

As the demand for Bitcoin-based financial products continues to rise, this Bermuda-based insurer is poised to lead the charge, offering a unique blend of innovation and security for the next generation of wealth management.
