US Spot Bitcoin ETFs Experience $409.5 Million Outflow After Binance Hack — BigGo Finance

Significant Outflows Hit US Spot Bitcoin ETFs Following Binance Hot Wallet Breach

US Bitcoin ETFs Experience Significant Outflow Amid Binance Security Breach

In a dramatic shift, US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have reversed a four-day inflow streak, facing a substantial outflow of $409.5 million on October 30. This downturn follows the alarming revelation of a hot wallet breach at Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, which has sent ripples through the crypto market.

According to data from Farside Investors, the outflow marks a stark contrast to the previous four trading days (October 26-29), during which these funds enjoyed a combined inflow of $440.8 million. The latest outflows were heavily concentrated in a few key funds: Fidelity’s FBTC experienced a staggering $201 million in outflows, while Ark Invest’s ARKB saw $129.5 million exit, together accounting for approximately 81% of the total outflow. Grayscale’s GBTC and Bitwise’s BITB also reported outflows of $53.3 million and $25.7 million, respectively.

Notably, the figures for BlackRock’s IBIT—the largest fund by assets—remain unreported, leaving the total outflow figure as a preliminary estimate. IBIT had previously been a significant driver of market sentiment, contributing $410.6 million, or roughly 93%, of the inflows during the preceding four-day period.

While the $409.5 million outflow is significant, it pales in comparison to earlier shocks this month, where combined outflows reached $773.5 million on October 22 and 23. The latest outflow represents only about 0.7% of the total market size, which has seen cumulative net inflows of $57.3 billion since 2014.

The impact of the Binance breach, which analysts estimate involved the misappropriation of approximately 18,270 BTC valued at around $1.47 billion, appears limited in the context of the ETF outflows. The daily outflow represents about 28% of the stolen amount. Meanwhile, spot Ethereum ETFs also recorded outflows, although this trend is seen as a continuation of a month-long pattern rather than a direct response to the Binance incident.

Despite the turmoil, cryptocurrency prices have remained relatively stable. As of 3:25 AM UTC on October 31, Bitcoin was trading at $77,382, down less than 0.1% over the previous 24 hours. This price holds just above the six-week low recorded on October 29, coinciding with Binance’s suspension of withdrawals.

Bitcoin’s recent performance underscores that ETF inflows alone cannot sustain price rallies. After starting the week at $79,989, Bitcoin climbed to $81,254 on the morning of October 29, only to retreat to $79,342 by the following morning. Ethereum also saw a decline, dropping from $2,325 to $2,224.

Broader market pressures, including rising oil prices due to escalating tensions in the Middle East, have compounded the situation. Brent crude briefly exceeded $117 per barrel, raising inflationary concerns and potentially limiting the Federal Reserve’s capacity for monetary easing. Coupled with rising US Treasury yields, the investment environment for risk assets has become increasingly challenging.

Supply-demand dynamics further complicate the landscape, as long-term holders have reduced their Bitcoin positions by approximately 90,800 BTC this month. Exchanges have seen a net inflow of about 26,000 BTC, indicating potential sell-side pressure. The rally on October 28 was largely driven by short-covering, with 75.4% of liquidations in the Bitcoin futures market that day consisting of short positions.

As the market grapples with these developments, Binance has acknowledged the reports of potential security issues and is currently investigating the breach. With estimates suggesting that approximately $6.3 billion was affected, the risk of a broader reassessment of exchange custody risks looms large.

Looking ahead, three key points will be critical to watch: First, whether BlackRock’s IBIT data will confirm or adjust the preliminary outflow estimate. Second, the performance of the October 31 trading session will indicate if the sell-off was a fleeting reaction or the beginning of a more sustained exit. Lastly, the ability of Bitcoin to maintain its position above the $77,000 level will be crucial. If IBIT reports outflows comparable to Fidelity’s, the narrative of a “limited adjustment” may falter, shifting market focus toward a more serious reassessment of custody risks.
