Akash Network Shifts Its AI Cloud from Its Own Blockchain to Solana: Will Other Projects Follow Suit?

Akash Network’s Bold Move: Abandoning Its Blockchain for Solana—Who Really Benefits?

Akash Network Votes to Migrate to Solana: A Bold Move Amidst Market Uncertainty

In a decisive shift that could reshape its future, Akash Network (CRYPTO: AKT) has overwhelmingly voted to transition from its own Cosmos-based blockchain to the Solana network (CRYPTO: SOL). The proposal, which garnered an impressive 97.3% approval from Akash holders, reflects a growing trend among crypto projects seeking to optimize their operations and reduce costs.

The voting period, which ran from October 26 to November 2, 2026, saw a turnout of 69.4%, with approximately 60 million AKT tokens supporting the migration. The successful Proposal 346 not only paves the way for a 1:1 conversion of AKT into Solana’s SPL token format but also establishes a one-way portal for token transfers over the next two years. The launch of the new token is anticipated within weeks, pending the completion of two independent audits.

Despite the overwhelming support for the transition, market reactions have been tepid. As of the latest trading session, AKT is priced at $0.61, reflecting a modest 0.3% increase over the past day but a notable 12.1% decline over the previous week. In contrast, Solana’s token is trading at $93, up 0.5%.

Transitioning Tokens, Not the Marketplace—Yet

Akash Network operates a unique marketplace where users post computing tasks, and service providers compete to fulfill them. Following its Mainnet 17 upgrade, every workload processed reduces the supply of AKT, aligning with rising demand for computing resources. However, the recent vote only pertains to the token migration; a separate proposal will be required to shift the entire marketplace, with no timeline currently established.

The transition plan includes launching a provider testnet that will run for at least six weeks, followed by a 14-day rehearsal period. During this time, live workloads will continue for 90 days, allowing users to migrate smoothly to the new system.

Stakers, who lock their AKT to secure the network in exchange for rewards, face the most significant challenges. They will undergo a 21-day unbonding period, and Akash has indicated that staking rewards will cease at the cutover.

Why Solana? A Cost-Effective Solution

Co-founder Greg Osuri highlighted the financial burdens of maintaining a sovereign chain, noting that Akash incurs costs for approximately 100 validators while managing custom software for Cosmos. By migrating to Solana, Akash anticipates a significant reduction in operational expenses, with daily network fees estimated at just 0.075 SOL.

Additionally, the move aims to tap into Solana’s vast user base, which boasts around $15 billion in stablecoins and approximately 2.2 million daily transaction users.

Lessons from Helium and Render: A Cautionary Tale

Akash’s decision echoes similar migrations by Helium (CRYPTO: HNT) and Render (CRYPTO: RENDER), both of which faced significant declines in token value post-transition. Render’s value plummeted by nearly 89% since its all-time high, while HNT has dropped over 80% in three years. The recent trends suggest that AKT’s 12.1% decline aligns with the downturns experienced by these projects, raising concerns about the potential impact on token holders.

The Future: More Projects to Follow?

As Akash embarks on this new journey, it may not be alone. Other Cosmos-based projects, including Kujira and Comdex, have recently wound down, indicating a possible trend of migration towards Solana. While some projects may remain on their chains due to specific requirements, simpler marketplaces may find Solana an attractive option, further solidifying its role in AI compute.

Despite the potential benefits for Akash as a company, the outlook for AKT holders remains uncertain. With projected daily fees not significantly increasing demand for SOL and the loss of staking yields, the transition may ultimately favor the network more than its token holders.

As the crypto landscape continues to evolve, only time will tell whether Akash’s bold move will pay off in the long run. For now, stakeholders are left navigating the complexities of this transition, hoping for a brighter future amidst the challenges ahead.
