Hyperliquid DEX Unlocks 1.75 Million HYPE Tokens Amid Market Concerns
Hyperliquid DEX Unleashes $60.4 Million Token Unlock Amid Market Concerns
In a significant move for the decentralized exchange (DEX) landscape, Hyperliquid announced a major unlock of 1.75 million HYPE tokens for its developers and core contributors on Saturday, valued at over $60.4 million. This event marks a pivotal moment as the team celebrates the first anniversary of Hyperliquid’s groundbreaking airdrop and token generation event.
According to pseudonymous developer iliensinc, this token unlock is part of a pre-established vesting schedule. He emphasized the scale of Hyperliquid’s previous airdrop, noting, “For perspective, about 270 million tokens were fully unlocked on Nov 29, 2024, in the largest airdrop in history, measured in today’s market value at about $9.5 billion. There are no investor unlocks, as Hyperliquid never raised any external capital.”
However, the announcement has raised eyebrows in the crypto community, sparking fears of potential selling pressure that could impact the HYPE token’s market price. Following the news, HYPE experienced a decline of approximately 4.6%.
Hyperliquid’s airdrop and token generation event was hailed as a transformative moment in the crypto industry, prioritizing a community-focused model that rewards early adopters, developers, and users over traditional venture capitalists. This innovative approach has set a new standard for product launches in the sector.
Market analyst and BitMEX founder Arthur Hayes weighed in on the situation, cautioning HYPE token holders to brace for ongoing selling pressure. “Even if the team pinky swears to not sell, there is nothing holding them to that,” he stated. Hayes noted that the market has already factored in the potential for daily selling pressure, which has contributed to HYPE’s decline since September.
The HYPE token has seen a staggering 42% drop from its all-time high of approximately $59.40, reached in September. Currently trading well below its 200-day moving average—a critical support level—the token began its downward trajectory on September 19, just before a historic market crash in October that saw certain altcoins lose up to 95% of their value. Notably, HYPE plummeted by about 54% in a single day during the October 10 crash but managed to rebound to the $40 mark within two days.
Despite the recent volatility, analysts and industry executives have lauded Hyperliquid for its impressive revenue generation and its ability to handle a staggering $330 billion in monthly trading volume with a relatively small development team. As the crypto landscape continues to evolve, all eyes will be on Hyperliquid to see how it navigates these challenges and maintains its innovative edge.
