AI Stocks Decline, Oil Surpasses $110, Bitcoin Dips to $81,000 Range

Market Turmoil: Cryptocurrencies Struggle Amid Tech Stock Decline and Rising Oil Prices

Cryptocurrency Market Faces Pressure Amid Tech Selloff and Rising Oil Prices

October 17, 2023 โ€“ Seoul, South Korea โ€“ Major cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH), experienced notable declines today as U.S. technology stocks faced a sharp downturn and global oil prices surged past $110 a barrel. The dual pressures of heavy borrowing for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and falling corporate bond prices have raised significant concerns among investors, leading to a volatile trading environment.

As of 11:15 a.m. KST, Bitcoin was trading at $81,614 on Binance’s USDT market, reflecting a 0.67% decrease over the past 24 hours. The cryptocurrency fluctuated between a high of $82,940 and a low of $80,809, underscoring the ongoing volatility in the market. Ether also slipped 0.63% to $2,424.25, while Solana (SOL) and XRP fell by 0.74% and 2.02%, respectively.

The tech sector’s woes were evident as the Nasdaq Composite closed down 2.15% at 26,140.03, with the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average also recording declines of 1.09% and 0.34%. Notably, the semiconductor-sector index has now fallen for eight consecutive sessions, marking its longest losing streak since 2008, with a cumulative drop of about 16%.

Market analysts are increasingly concerned about the heavy borrowing required to fund AI infrastructure investments. Corporate bond prices for companies like CoreWeave have plummeted, indicating a 60% probability of default. “The key concern is how much money the hyperscalers are borrowing,” said Dennis Polmer, chief investment officer at Montes Financial. “They have exhausted massive cash flow and are now turning to debt, which will create problems ahead.”

Adding to the financial strain, Brent crude oil prices climbed above $110 a barrel, driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine. December Brent settled at $109.86, up 3.72%, while November West Texas Intermediate closed at $101.41, up 3.51%. The rise in oil prices has renewed inflationary pressures, contributing to an increase in Treasury yields.

In the cryptocurrency market, the challenge remains whether spot demand can recover sufficiently to support prices. Colin Vasco of Coinbase Institutional noted that the correlation between Bitcoin and semiconductor stocks has dropped to less than half of its January peak. “Spot demand remains too weak to provide solid support for prices,” he stated.

Despite the bearish sentiment, some investors are viewing the technology selloff as a potential buying opportunity. ARK Invest has increased its holdings in CoreWeave and Cerebras Systems, while Keith Lerner, chief investment officer at Truist Advisory Services, believes much of the negative news has already been priced into technology shares. As the earnings season approaches, the focus will shift to how AI revenue growth can offset the burdens of investment and borrowing.

As the cryptocurrency market grapples with these challenges, investors will be closely monitoring both the tech sector’s recovery and the implications of rising oil prices on inflation and overall market stability.
