Bitcoin Surges to Weekly High Amid Positive Market Sentiment and Tech Earnings
Bitcoin Surges to Weekly High Amid Tech Stock Rebound
October 21, 2023 — In a notable turn of events, Bitcoin (BTC) has reached its highest level in a week, trading around $83,500 on Wednesday, marking a 0.6% increase since midnight UTC. This surge comes as Asian technology stocks experience an earnings-led rebound, boosting risk assets across the board.
The momentum was set by strong earnings reports from major players like SpaceX (SPCX) and Super Micro Computer (SMCI), which released impressive results on Tuesday. The positive sentiment spilled over into global markets, with South Korea’s Kospi index climbing 3.29% and Nasdaq 100 futures rising by 0.44%.
Adding to the excitement, Elon Musk, CEO of both SpaceX and Tesla (TSLA), announced that the two companies have formed special committees to explore a potential merger. This merger could see over 30,000 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $2.5 billion, combined on their balance sheets.
In the altcoin market, Ether (ETH) mirrored Bitcoin’s gains, rising 0.6% to nearly $2,460. The CoinDesk 80 (CD80) index also saw a 0.47% increase, while the CoinDesk Memecoin Index surged by 1.2%. Notably, Solana’s Alpenglow upgrade, which aims for a finality of about 150 milliseconds, is set to go live today, further energizing the crypto landscape.
Derivatives Activity on the Rise
Futures trading has seen a significant uptick, with 24-hour crypto futures volume hitting $190 billion, a 19% increase. Open interest (OI) has also risen nearly 4% to $145 billion, while liquidations jumped 76% to $284 million. The taker long/short volume ratio indicates a bullish tilt, with 53% leaning towards long positions.
Despite the positive price movements, the overall positioning remains light, with OI figures well below historical peaks. Privacy coins are attracting new leverage, with Zcash (ZEC) seeing a 24% increase in OI alongside a 12% price gain. Meanwhile, Monero (XMR) also experienced an 8% rise in OI, nearing record highs.
Market Sentiment and Volatility
Volatility expectations for Bitcoin and Ether are cooling, with Bitcoin’s 30-day implied volatility index falling below 40%. While Bitcoin options still lean towards puts, the most-traded bets are increasingly focused on upside plays. Ether options show a similar trend, albeit with a slightly weaker bias towards puts.
Token Highlights
Zcash (ZEC) has risen 0.9% since midnight, extending its 24-hour jump to 11% following the announcement of a November activation date for its NU7 upgrade. Near (NEAR) emerged as the biggest gainer in the CoinDesk 100, up 6.0% to about $5.23, fueled by growth in its cross-chain swap product.
Conversely, Aerodrome (AERO) faced a 4.4% decline, marking the steepest loss in the CD100, while Injective (INJ) slipped 2.1%, trimming gains built on pending U.S. exchange-traded fund applications.
As the crypto market continues to evolve, traders and investors remain vigilant, watching for further developments that could impact this dynamic landscape.
