Bitcoin Faces Pressure Amid Rising Oil Prices and Security Concerns
Investing.com — As the weekend approaches, Bitcoin continues to grapple with significant market pressures, trading at approximately $82,450 on Friday. The world’s leading cryptocurrency has been affected by a confluence of rising oil prices, expectations of tighter U.S. monetary policy, and renewed security concerns within the crypto space.
On Saturday morning, Bitcoin was slightly up at $82,674.5, reflecting a modest 0.53% increase over the previous 24 hours. However, it remains down about 1% from its intraday highs, marking a challenging week for the digital asset. After peaking near $87,000 last Sunday, Bitcoin is now on track for a weekly decline of nearly 3%.
The cryptocurrency market is feeling the heat from rising energy prices and the prospect of higher interest rates, prompting investors to reassess their strategies ahead of crucial inflation reports. The upcoming consumer price index (CPI) and producer price index (PPI) reports, set to be released next week, are expected to provide further insights into the Federal Reserve’s potential monetary policy moves. Currently, markets anticipate that the central bank will maintain its benchmark rate during the October 27-28 meeting, with a possible 25-basis-point increase in December.
Higher interest rates typically dampen demand for speculative assets like Bitcoin, as investors shift their focus to traditional fixed-income investments that offer more stable returns.
Adding to the market’s woes, security concerns have emerged following an investigation launched by hardware wallet manufacturer Ledger. Reports surfaced of missing cryptocurrency linked to devices sold through a Southeast Asian reseller, with blockchain investigators estimating potential losses between $86 million and $93.4 million. While Ledger has not confirmed these figures, the company has requested that reseller CryptoBilis suspend sales and shipments pending the outcome of the investigation. Importantly, there is no evidence to suggest that Ledger’s own systems were compromised.
In corporate news, Bitcoin activity remains a focal point as Strategy’s (NASDAQ:MSTR) high-yield preferred shares, STRC, surged to $99.71 on Friday, their highest level since June. The preferred stock boasts a 12% annualized dividend rate, with Strategy maintaining dollar reserves to support payments. A rise above $100 could enable the company to issue additional preferred shares to finance further Bitcoin purchases, potentially bolstering corporate demand for the cryptocurrency.
Meanwhile, Ether saw a slight uptick of 0.29% over the past 24 hours but remains down approximately 7% for the week, underperforming Bitcoin as the broader cryptocurrency market struggles to maintain Friday’s recovery.
As the weekend unfolds, investors will be closely monitoring both macroeconomic indicators and developments within the cryptocurrency sector, hoping for signs of stability in a turbulent market.
