LayerZero’s ZRO Token Airdrop Sparks Controversy and Backlash
LayerZero’s ZRO Token Airdrop Sparks Controversy with ‘Proof-of-Donation’ Mechanism
Another airdrop controversy has rocked the crypto community this week as LayerZero’s interoperability protocol announced the launch of its ZRO Token alongside a unique claiming mechanism that has left investors reeling.
The LayerZero Foundation had initially teased the upcoming airdrop, with CEO Bryan Pellegrino sharing key details of the distribution plan. The community was set to receive 23.8% of the 1 billion ZRO tokens supply, with 8.5% allocated for distribution on the first day and the remainder spread out over 36 months.
Despite implementing anti-Sybil measures, such as a self-reporting system and a bounty hunter program, the protocol faced backlash from users who felt the initial distribution was too low and did not match their transaction volume. Some compared the ZRO airdrop to zkSync’s recent controversial token distribution.
However, the situation escalated when LayerZero announced a new claiming mechanism called ‘Proof-of-Donation’ just before the airdrop. Users were required to donate $0.1 in USDC, USDT, or ETH per token to claim their allocation, with donations going to the Protocol Guild for Ethereum developers. The protocol estimated up to $18.5 million in donations and offered to match donations up to $10 million.
Many in the community criticized the new mechanism, calling it a “Pay to Claim” airdrop and questioning the timing and mandatory nature of the donation. Some viewed it as a tax rather than a donation, leading to further backlash against LayerZero.
In response to the criticism, Pellegrino defended the decision, stating that users were not obligated to donate and that claiming the tokens was optional. Despite this, the ZRO token price dropped by 22% in just four hours following the announcement.
As the crypto community continues to react to LayerZero’s controversial airdrop, the future of the ZRO token remains uncertain amidst the ongoing backlash.
