Bhutan Emerges as a Cryptocurrency Hub: State-Owned Conglomerate Holds $780 Million in Bitcoin
Bhutan, a small Himalayan kingdom, has made a surprising entrance into the world of cryptocurrencies, with a report revealing that the country’s state-owned conglomerate, Druk Holdings, holds a massive 13,011 bitcoins. This substantial Bitcoin stash, valued at around $780 million, equates to roughly $1,000 in bitcoins per citizen of Bhutan.
The source of Bhutan’s impressive Bitcoin holdings comes from mining operations conducted by Druk Holdings, leveraging the country’s hydroelectric power resources. Satellite images have confirmed the presence of major mining facilities, including one located on the grounds of the failed Education City project.
Unlike many governments, Bhutan’s Bitcoin holdings are not the result of asset seizures but are earned through large-scale mining operations. Since early 2023, these operations have ramped up, placing Bhutan fourth globally in terms of Bitcoin holdings. The country also holds additional digital assets, including Ethereum, Binance’s BNB token, and the Polygon blockchain.
Bhutan’s move into cryptocurrency mining was initially kept secret but was revealed when Forbes exposed the locations of the mining facilities using satellite imagery. The country’s partnership with Bitdeer Technologies to develop green cryptocurrency mining further highlights its unique advantage in the sector, thanks to its abundant hydroelectric power.
Despite its foray into cryptocurrencies, Bhutan remains focused on broader state investment strategies, including infrastructure, energy, drones, and physical mining of materials like magnesium. The country’s competitive edge in the crypto industry is attributed to its clean and cost-effective energy resources.
With Bhutan’s unexpected emergence as a hub in the world of cryptocurrencies, the kingdom is proving that even small nations can make a big impact in the rapidly evolving digital economy.
