Ether climbs on ETF news as flat at $61k amid Mt Gox fears

Bitcoin Price Falls Amid Mt. Gox Jitters and Strong Dollar Sentiment

Bitcoin price fell slightly on Thursday, continuing its downward trend after a major rout over the past week. The drop in price was attributed to fears of a massive sale event stemming from the defunct exchange Mt. Gox, which kept traders cautious towards the token.

The price of Bitcoin fell 0.3% in the past 24 hours to $61,578.8 by 09:30 ET (13:30 GMT). The liquidators for Mt. Gox announced plans to distribute crypto assets stolen during a 2014 hack, including large quantities of Bitcoin. Traders anticipate that the recipients of the assets will likely liquidate their holdings, putting pressure on Bitcoin prices.

In addition to the Mt. Gox jitters, the strong dollar also weighed on the broader sentiment towards crypto. Traders were concerned about an upcoming U.S. inflation reading that could impact the outlook for interest rates, keeping them biased towards the dollar.

Meanwhile, altcoins saw mixed performance as traders remained focused on the dollar. Ether, the world’s second-largest token, rose 2.1% to $3,444.2 after reports that the SEC could approve a spot Ether ETF as soon as next week. Other altcoins had varied gains, with some remaining flat and others jumping more than 7%.

Optimism over a potential Ether ETF has been driving the token’s price higher, with Galaxy Research predicting that Ether ETFs could attract $1 billion of net inflows per month once approved for trading. The approval of a spot Bitcoin ETF earlier this year saw Bitcoin briefly rally to record highs, but the token has since struggled to offer significant returns.

Overall, the cryptocurrency market remains volatile as traders navigate through various factors impacting prices, including Mt. Gox distributions, inflation readings, and the potential approval of Ether ETFs.
