New Investment Trend: Dividend-Seeking Capital Could Drive Bitcoin Demand, Says Fidelity
New Investment Strategy Could Drive Bitcoin Demand, Says Fidelity
In a groundbreaking report, Fidelity Investments has unveiled a potential new source of demand for Bitcoin, suggesting that capital from investors seeking regular dividends could significantly influence the cryptocurrency’s market dynamics. This innovative strategy involves companies issuing perpetual preferred stock, with the proceeds earmarked for Bitcoin purchases.
Jack Wainwright, a researcher at Fidelity, estimates the market for Bitcoin-related perpetual preferred stock to be around $12 billion. He notes that even a modest allocation from the vast $150 trillion global fixed-income market could create substantial shifts in Bitcoin supply and demand.
Perpetual preferred stock, which has no maturity date, offers dividends based on specific issuance terms. This dual approach allows investors to pursue dividend income while companies utilize the funds to acquire Bitcoin. As of October 5, Fidelity reported that 135,979 Bitcoin had been purchased through this mechanism, with over 95,000 acquired between March and May alone.
One notable player in this space is Strive, a U.S.-based company that recently issued its own perpetual preferred stock, dubbed SATS, on October 20. The offering raised $630 million before expenses, with proceeds designated for Bitcoin purchases, income-generating assets, and operational funding. SATS boasts an impressive annual dividend rate of 15% on a reference amount of $100 per share, although the actual offering price was set at $90. Dividends are scheduled to commence on November 9, pending board approval and available funds.
However, the strategy is not without its risks. Wainwright cautions that the sustainability of these dividends hinges on Bitcoin’s price performance. If Bitcoin values remain stagnant or decline, companies may struggle to meet their dividend obligations, potentially leading to financial instability. Unlike traditional money-market funds, these perpetual preferred products are subject to the volatility of Bitcoin prices and the financial health of the issuing companies.
As the cryptocurrency market continues to evolve, Fidelity’s insights could pave the way for a new wave of investment strategies, merging the worlds of fixed income and digital assets. Investors and analysts alike will be closely monitoring how this trend develops and its potential impact on the future of Bitcoin.
