Franklin Templeton Invests in Bitcoin Layer 2 Project, Bitlayer Labs
Financial stalwart Franklin Templeton is making waves in the world of cryptocurrency with its recent investment in the Bitcoin ecosystem. The company, which launched a Bitcoin exchange-traded fund in January, has now led a $11 million Series A funding round for Bitlayer Labs, a Bitcoin layer 2 project.
A layer 2 network like Bitlayer sits atop the base layer of Bitcoin and offers a faster and cheaper way to process transactions. This latest funding round brings Bitlayer’s total funding to $16 million, with other investors including ABCDE, Framework Ventures, and more.
Bitlayer is the first Bitcoin infrastructure project to receive investment from an ETF-licensed institution like Franklin Templeton. The partnership highlights the growing interest from institutions in addressing the technical challenges that Bitcoin faces in terms of scaling.
Bitlayer co-founder Charlie Hu explained that Franklin Templeton’s investment is driven by the desire to fund solutions that could lead to yield-generating opportunities for Bitcoin holders. Without the infrastructure of a layer 2, there are limited yield-bearing opportunities for Bitcoin sitting in cold wallets.
Bitlayer’s core objective is to address Bitcoin’s trade-off between security and completeness through cryptographic innovations and blockchain protocol engineering. The company aims to scale Bitcoin while maintaining its security, providing users with a high-throughput, low-cost transaction experience.
The funds raised will be used to support the development of protocols within the Bitlayer ecosystem, including the Mainnet-V2, a Bitcoin-native rollup. Franklin Templeton’s managing principal of Digital Assets, Kevin Farrelly, expressed excitement about the potential of Bitlayer’s technology to unlock new opportunities for Bitcoin.
Overall, Franklin Templeton’s investment in Bitlayer Labs marks a significant milestone in the Bitcoin world, as institutions like Franklin Templeton show increasing interest in the cryptocurrency space. With the support of a financial stalwart like Franklin Templeton, Bitlayer Labs is poised to make history in the Bitcoin ecosystem.
