Rodeo NFT Marketplace Shuts Down Amidst Challenging Market Conditions
Rodeo NFT Marketplace Shuts Down Amid Market Struggles
In a significant blow to the non-fungible token (NFT) landscape, Rodeo, a social NFT marketplace, has announced its closure, becoming the second platform to do so this week. The decision comes as the NFT market continues to grapple with a challenging climate, marked by declining trading volumes and a lack of sustained growth.
Launched in March 2022 via Apple’s iOS store, Rodeo aimed to revolutionize NFT collecting by focusing on community engagement rather than mere transactions. The platform was designed to reward creators for their contributions, allowing users to collect and share NFTs in a social-media-like environment. However, despite its innovative approach, Rodeo struggled to scale effectively, leading to its eventual shutdown.
In a candid post on X, Rodeo CEO and co-founder Kayvon Tehranian expressed disappointment over the platform’s inability to achieve its core objectives. “We believed collecting could be playful and communal — not just transactional. That belief guided every product decision we made,” he wrote. “Ultimately, Rodeo didn’t achieve its core objective. While the product resonated deeply with a committed community, it didn’t grow to the scale required for the platform to be sustainable long-term.”
As Rodeo prepares to wind down operations, it has outlined a plan for users to migrate their assets and data to other platforms. Users will have the opportunity to transfer their media and metadata to the blockchain data storage platform Arweave. Additionally, Rodeo will provide an asset migration assistant to guide users through the process of transferring their assets from the platform’s smart contract.
The platform will continue to operate normally until February 10, after which it will switch to read-only mode. By March 10, Rodeo will be completely offline.
Tehranian’s week of organizational shifts doesn’t end with Rodeo. He also announced the transfer of ownership of the NFT artist platform and gallery Foundation to digital art platform Blackdove. Foundation, which has facilitated $230 million in primary sales since its inception, will continue to operate under new leadership committed to its long-term future.
The NFT market has been in a downward spiral since a major crash in 2022, with only brief price spikes and no sustained recovery. Data from CryptoSlam reveals that Ethereum, which once boasted nearly $5 billion in NFT trading volume at the market’s peak in January 2022, saw a drastic decline to just $159.2 million in January 2026.
In related news, Nifty Gateway, another prominent marketplace that emerged during the NFT boom, has also provided updates on its winding-down process. Following community feedback, Nifty Gateway announced it will use Arweave for users to transfer their media and metadata, extending its asset migration deadline to April 23, 2026.
As the NFT market continues to face uncertainty, the closures of Rodeo and Nifty Gateway serve as stark reminders of the challenges within this once-booming sector.
