Standard Chartered Launches Groundbreaking Cryptocurrency Trading Solution in UAE

Dubai, UAE — In a significant move for the financial landscape, Standard Chartered has unveiled a pioneering cryptocurrency trading solution tailored for affluent clients, marking a global first for the bank and the first offering of its kind by an international bank in the UAE. This innovative service aims to provide a secure and structured pathway for clients to engage with digital assets, reflecting the growing interest and maturity of this asset class.

As digital assets gain traction among high-net-worth investors, Standard Chartered’s new offering comes at a pivotal moment. With increasing regulatory clarity and institutional adoption, the bank is stepping up to meet the evolving needs of its clients, allowing them to diversify their portfolios with confidence.

The new trading solution is a collaborative effort between the bank’s Wealth and Retail Banking (WRB) and Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) divisions, in partnership with SC Ventures-backed Zodia Markets. Regulated by the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), the platform integrates institutional-grade custody, liquidity, and client access into a seamless end-to-end digital asset ecosystem.

Eligible clients will now have the ability to buy and sell Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) directly through their existing Standard Chartered accounts, eliminating the complexities of separate wallets or third-party platforms. This closed-loop model not only simplifies transactions but also minimizes exposure to third-party risks, ensuring that clients can access digital assets within a trusted banking environment.

Ayesha Abbas, Managing Director and Head of Affluent and Wealth Solutions for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, expressed pride in the UAE being the launchpad for this global initiative. “This solution gives eligible clients a simple and familiar way to access Bitcoin and Ethereum directly through their existing banking relationship, adding a new option to complement their broader investment portfolios while maintaining the standards of governance and oversight they expect from Standard Chartered,” she stated.

Samir Subberwal, Global Head of Wealth Solutions, emphasized the importance of security and trust in the evolving digital asset landscape. “As client interest in digital assets continues to grow, this launch represents a significant milestone for Standard Chartered as we bring digital assets into our core wealth offering,” he said. “Clients are increasingly looking not only for access but also for the security, trust, and confidence that comes from investing through a regulated institution.”

The offering has received licensing approval from VARA and will initially be available to Professional Investor clients in the UAE, with plans for expansion into other markets in the future. This launch is part of Standard Chartered’s broader strategy to enhance its suite of wealth solutions, which already includes access to cryptocurrency ETFs and structured products.

As the demand for regulated digital asset infrastructure continues to rise, Standard Chartered is committed to delivering innovative solutions that empower clients to seize investment opportunities in this rapidly evolving market. With this groundbreaking offering, the bank is not only reinforcing its position as a leading international wealth manager but also setting a new standard for how clients can safely engage with digital assets.
