Orionx Exchange Shuts Down Amid $7 Million Asset Exodus, Customer Withdrawals Frozen
In a shocking turn of events, Chilean cryptocurrency exchange Orionx has announced its permanent closure, freezing customer withdrawals after a forensic audit revealed that over $7 million in assets had been transferred to wallets outside its control. The exchange, which had received backing from Tether less than a year ago, is now facing a tumultuous wind-down process, leaving customers in a precarious position.
The audit, conducted in the wake of the asset transfers, prompted Orionx to halt all withdrawals as it grapples with the fallout. The exchange stated that this decision was made to prevent a rush of withdrawals that could disadvantage remaining customers. Currently, Orionx is at the initial stage of a five-step closure process, which includes account reconciliation and the approval of a restitution plan before any funds can be returned. However, no timeline for repayment has been disclosed.
The situation has left customers in a state of uncertainty. Chile’s Comisión para el Mercado Financiero (CMF) has stated that it cannot oversee the wind-down of Orionx or mandate the return of customer assets, effectively leaving users reliant on the company’s restitution process or potential legal action. The CMF had previously rejected Orionx’s registration and authorization application, which limited the exchange’s operations and left it unable to take on new regulated activities.
Tether’s investment in Orionx last June was intended to bolster the exchange’s expansion across Latin America, following an earlier investment by affiliated exchange Bitfinex in 2023. However, the recent developments have cast a shadow over that vision, with customers now facing an uncertain future regarding the recovery of their funds.
Orionx has expressed its commitment to returning as much customer property as possible “as quickly and fairly” as circumstances allow. The exchange has also notified prosecutors about the unauthorized transfers and filed a criminal complaint against former executives, although no responsibility for the missing assets has yet been established.
As the situation unfolds, customers are left to wonder how much of their investments can be salvaged. With the exchange still needing to reconcile individual balances and determine available assets, the path to restitution appears long and fraught with challenges. The closure of Orionx serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with cryptocurrency investments, particularly in a regulatory landscape that offers limited protections for users.
