Testing Compliance: Opening Accounts at Top Crypto Platforms in Hong Kong
Hong Kong’s new licensing rules for crypto exchanges have caused a stir in the industry, with some platforms complying and others blocking access. As a resident of Hong Kong, I decided to test which exchanges were following the new regulations by attempting to open accounts at the top 10 global platforms.
Surprisingly, I was able to successfully open accounts at Binance, Coinbase, and Kraken, despite none of them having applied for a license. This raises questions about the effectiveness of the new regime in curbing crypto crime in the city.
The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) has reported a significant increase in crypto crime cases in recent years, with investors losing millions of dollars to fraudulent schemes and disappearing exchanges. The new licensing regime is aimed at helping investors identify reputable exchanges and avoid falling victim to scams.
While some platforms like HashKey Exchange and OSL have obtained licenses, others like OKX, Bybit, and Gate.io have opted to withdraw their services in Hong Kong. Several platforms blocked me from signing up, indicating a crackdown on unlicensed exchanges.
Binance, one of the platforms I was able to open an account with, has issued a warning on its website stating that its services are not intended for individuals in Hong Kong. Despite this, I was able to complete the registration process and start trading without any issues.
Coinbase, on the other hand, has not applied for a license in Hong Kong but continues to operate in the region. The platform’s unclear regulatory status raises concerns about the protection of investors’ funds.
Overall, the implementation of the new licensing rules in Hong Kong has created a mixed response from crypto exchanges. As the industry continues to evolve, it will be crucial for investors to stay informed and choose platforms that comply with regulatory requirements to ensure the safety of their investments.
