Bitcoin Could Reach $1 Million if Store-of-Value Market Continues Rapid Expansion: Bitwise – DL News

Bitcoin’s Path to $1 Million: A Conservative Outlook on Future Growth and Market Dynamics

Bitcoin Could Reach $1 Million in 10 Years, Says Crypto Executive

In a bold forecast that has captured the attention of the financial world, Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise, has suggested that Bitcoin could soar to $1 million per coin within the next decade. This prediction hinges on what he describes as “reasonably conservative assumptions” regarding the growth of the market for safe-haven assets.

Hougan’s analysis points to the rapid expansion of the store-of-value market, which has seen significant growth over the past 20 years. Currently valued at approximately $36 trillion, gold remains the primary asset in this category, while Bitcoin holds a market capitalization of around $1.4 trillion, representing just 4% of the store-of-value market.

“If the store-of-value market continues to grow at its current pace, Bitcoin would only need to capture about 17% of that market to surpass the $1 million mark,” Hougan explained in a memo released this week. He emphasized that this projection is based on the assumption that the market will reach around $121 trillion in ten years, a figure that reflects the historical growth rate of gold, which has averaged a compound annual growth rate of 13% since 2004.

While the prospect of Bitcoin hitting $1 million may seem far-fetched to some, Hougan argues that dismissing it overlooks the rapid growth of the store-of-value market. He acknowledges, however, that achieving this milestone would require Bitcoin’s price to increase by approximately 1,300%, a daunting challenge.

Yet, there are potential headwinds that could dampen this bullish outlook. Hougan cautions that if governments reduce their reliance on quantitative easing and low interest rates, the fear of currency debasement—which has historically driven investors toward gold and Bitcoin—may diminish. Such a shift could negatively impact the prices of both assets.

Despite these uncertainties, Hougan remains optimistic. He suggests that the projections could be conservative, as rising concerns over government debt may accelerate the growth of the store-of-value market and lead Bitcoin to capture an even larger share.

As the cryptocurrency landscape continues to evolve, the debate over Bitcoin’s future remains heated. With proponents like Hougan advocating for its potential as a safe-haven asset, the next decade could prove pivotal in determining whether Bitcoin will indeed reach the $1 million milestone.
