Onchain Indicators Suggest Potential Market Bottom for Bitcoin

Bitcoin Holds Steady Above $82,000 as Traders Anticipate Key Economic Data

October 9, 2023

Bitcoin (BTC) has maintained a stable position above $82,000 on Monday, as traders brace for significant U.S. economic data that could influence market sentiment. The cryptocurrency has shown resilience a year after experiencing its largest single-day liquidation event, according to a report from crypto trading firm QCP Group.

Despite fears of a repeat of last year’s October 10 sell-off, which sent shockwaves through the market, the anticipated downturn has yet to materialize. Concerns over substantial Bitcoin transfers by the U.S. government and reports of Ledger wallet compromises over the weekend have added to the cautious atmosphere. However, QCP noted that while the spot market performance has not met expectations for a robust October rally, derivatives indicators suggest that traders are positioning themselves for a potential breakout.

One notable indicator is the sizable $90,000/$95,000/$100,000 call butterfly set to expire on October 30, which represents a significant concentration of open interest for the end of the month. As traders keep a close eye on macroeconomic developments, QCP has identified the upcoming U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) data on Wednesday and Producer Price Index (PPI) data on Thursday as pivotal events that could dictate Bitcoin’s trajectory.

Adding to the market’s uncertainty, Federal Reserve Chair Warsh is scheduled to speak at the IMF-World Bank Annual meetings on Friday. Analysts are wary that a repeat of his hawkish remarks from Jackson Hole could further pressure market sentiment.

Onchain Data Signals Potential Market Bottom

In contrast to the cautious outlook, CryptoQuant contributor XWIN Japan has identified early signs that Bitcoin may be nearing a market bottom as the U.S. midterm elections approach on November 3. XWIN’s report highlights several factors contributing to Bitcoin’s vulnerability, including elevated U.S. Treasury yields, high oil prices, outflows from spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and profit-taking activities.

Despite these challenges, XWIN pointed to three onchain indicators suggesting that selling pressure may be easing. Firstly, Bitcoin reserves on crypto exchanges remain low, indicating fewer BTC are readily available for immediate selling. Secondly, Bitcoin’s Apparent Demand metric has rebounded sharply, signaling a recovery in demand conditions. Lastly, whale holdings have remained elevated at around 3 million BTC throughout the recent price correction.

The report also notes that easing oil prices and the upcoming U.S. midterm elections could improve market conditions. Brent crude has dropped from nearly $110 to around $103, while the elections may provide clarity on the political landscape, prompting investors to reassess their allocations.

XWIN concluded that these metrics suggest improving conditions for a market bottom, emphasizing that sustained ETF inflows, stronger U.S. spot-market buying, and continued demand recovery would provide more convincing confirmation.

As of the latest update, Bitcoin is trading at $82,620, reflecting a 1% decline over the past 24 hours. Traders remain vigilant as they await critical economic data that could shape the future of the cryptocurrency market.
