TLDR: DOJ Seizes Domains of 3 Crypto Exchanges Linked to $800+ Million in Illicit Transactions
DOJ Cracks Down on Crypto Exchanges Linked to $800+ Million in Illicit Transactions
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has made a major move against three cryptocurrency exchanges accused of facilitating over $800 million in illegal transactions. This operation is part of a larger effort to disrupt Russian money laundering activities.
On Thursday, the DOJ announced the seizure of domains linked to UAPS, PinPays, and PM2BTC. These exchanges allegedly processed about $1.15 billion in digital asset transactions, with 32% tied to criminal activity.
Two Russian nationals, Sergey Ivanov and Timur Shakhmametov, have been charged for operating money laundering services catering to cybercriminals. Ivanov, also known as “Taleon,” is accused of providing payment processing services to carding websites and handling proceeds from Joker’s Stash.
In a coordinated effort, Dutch authorities seized servers hosting PM2BTC and Cryptex, recovering over $7 million in cryptocurrency. Cryptex, tied to money laundering activities, facilitated transactions worth $1.4 billion, with 31% linked to criminal conduct.
The U.S. Treasury has sanctioned Ivanov and Cryptex, and the State Department is offering rewards for information leading to the arrest of those involved in illegal activities.
This crackdown underscores law enforcement’s ongoing efforts to combat cybercrime and disrupt financial networks supporting illegal activities. By targeting crypto exchanges facilitating these transactions, authorities aim to cut off a crucial lifeline for cybercriminals and money launderers.
While the seizure of domains and charges against the Russian nationals represent a significant blow to cybercrime infrastructure, it also highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating illegal activities in the cryptocurrency world.
