Scroll’s SCR Token Airdrop Launches Tomorrow: Transactions Plummet as Airdrop Campaign Ends

Scroll’s SCR token is set to launch tomorrow, but the excitement surrounding the event has been overshadowed by a significant drop in transactions on the blockchain. Since the end of Scroll’s airdrop campaign, users have seemingly lost interest in using the platform.

Ethereum layer 2 Scroll had been gearing up to airdrop millions of valuable tokens to users who participated in its Scroll Sessions points campaign. However, once the campaign ended, transaction numbers on the blockchain took a nosedive. On October 18, transactions on Scroll reached an all-time high of 962,000, but just 24 hours later, that number plummeted by 70% to only 289,000, according to data from L2Beat.

The sudden decrease in transactions can be attributed to the fact that they no longer count towards Scroll’s points campaign, leaving users without a financial incentive to continue using the blockchain. In contrast, rival layer 2 blockchains like Coinbase’s Base and Arbitrum saw little change in transaction counts during the same period.

Airdrops can be a double-edged sword for crypto projects, as they can attract attention and users but also risk losing those users once the airdrop ends. If users leave a project en masse, it can negatively impact the value of the project’s token, especially if it launched at a high valuation.

Scroll is not the only project to experience a drop in users post-airdrop. ZKsync saw an 80% decrease in transactions following its June airdrop. However, there are exceptions, such as Sanctum, a liquid staking protocol on Solana, which saw a 20% increase in deposits after a token airdrop in July.

Despite the challenges, Scroll is moving forward with its SCR token airdrop, with eligible users set to receive tokens starting at 6 am on Tuesday UK time. The token will allow holders to propose and vote on changes to the Scroll blockchain, with bonus tokens going to those who met specific criteria.

With a valuation of $1.36 billion, Scroll’s SCR token is already trading on Hyperliquid’s premarket. As users eagerly await the airdrop, the future of Scroll and its token remains uncertain in the ever-evolving world of blockchain technology.
